Utopia from a distance.

For centuries mankind has searched for a utopia: a society of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions.

Following are some of my ideas of what a utopia would contain. But I don’t dwell much on political ideology. The government of the United States, while not perfect, is pretty darned good and standard methods of cities with mayors, councils, etc. would be sufficient, at least initially. I may plunge into political ideas later, but not yet. My ideas encompass just one town or city, not an entire nation or even state.

Utopia—for that’s what I’ll call it—would have to start as an experimental city, out in the middle of the beautiful nowhere. I’d love it to be located somewhere near a coast, but, seeing as how these areas are already heavily populated, it probably isn’t practical. Utopia would have to be located several miles from any other habitation (i.e. city, town), for reasons which will become apparent later. Somewhere in the American West will be the ideal location—there’s tons of nothing in much of the West. The desert is not preferable, since it sucks and is too damn hot. Montana appeals to me for some reason.

Utopia should embrace and encourage the best systems and technologies the world has to offer. Politically, it should ensure freedom, liberty and diversity. This being said, it should still be very patriotic.

Enough on politics.

A new city, built from the ground up, is required in order to use the best systems and technologies, Retrofitting an existing city, while valuable, would take too damn long and I’m impatient. Really, for all the systems I’m suggesting, installing all of them for Utopia from the get-go would take less time then installing just one in an existing city.

The rest of this article is split into sections covering what would be included for each area of Utopia, such as homes, schools and transportation.

In cases where I don’t mention something, you can assume they are the same as one would find in any other major metropolitan area, such as Colorado Springs or Los Gatos, California.
